Quilted Pot Holders Galore

Along with my Hot Oven Mitts, I have been stitching like crazy making Quilted Pot Holders.

Each pot holder is quilted from various strips of fabric that I had left over from making my spider web quilt. They have Insul-Bright (which is an insulated heat protecting batting), regular batting (to absorb moisture that can be given off from the heat), and a solid colored white or cream cotton backing.

They measure about 8 inches square. The pot holders are durable and machine washable. They should not be used in a microwave as Insul-Bright has a metal lining which gives it the heat resistance.

Quilted Oven or Grilling Mitts

Handmade Quilted Oven or Grilling Mitts

I just recently decided to try making some potholders and mitts for the kitchen. These are my mitts.

I found some interesting cotton fabric. I layered the fabric with Insul-Bright, batting, and a solid colored cotton fabric. I quilted the mitt halves and then machine stitched and serged the 2 halves together. I added a binding to the cuff and a hanging hook. I could have gotten the thumb area a little more flat, but serging it makes it stronger and harder to turn.

Brown and Black Nature Quilt - A New Quilt for a Baby Boy

Baby Boy Brown and Black Rustic Outside Nature Quilt- Jelly Roll Style

This quilt has a variety of beautiful nature themed patterned fabrics in various shades of browns and blacks. It has a nature themed beige back and is bound with a solid brown fabric. It is quilted with a meandering leaf stitch. I straight stitched the binding on the quilt.

If you don't know what a Jelly Roll is, it is a roll of 2.5 inch strips of various patterned fabrics. I stitched the Jelly Rolls together and washed them. I also pre-washed the cotton l fabric for the back of the quilt and the fabric I wanted to use as a binder to prevent shrinkage later on.

My Jelly Roll Quilts are about 29" wide and 42" tall. They vary slightly in size as they are all handmade.

Welcome Pillow - Candlewicking

Slate Blue Decorative "Welcome" Pillow -
Hand Embroidered, Candlewicking Style

This welcome pillow would make a beautiful addition to a guest room. It is a thin 2 ply slate blue yarn stitched on unbleached muslin cloth. The Muslin is framed by a tree pattern blue fabric. The back was created using this same fabric. This measures approximately 9 inches x 15 inches.

Candlewicking is a technique that uses French Knots (or Colonial Knots) as well as other embroidery techniques on unbleached muslin using thread, floss, or thin yarn. The thread used is typically Ecru (or cream color), but I used a light blue thin 2 ply yarn.

This welcome pattern originally came from a Canterbury Designs kit entitled "Welcome". It was originally supposed to be matted and a fabric frame for display, but I liked the pillow idea better!

Oh....if you don't remember from previous posts... I really dislike French Knots, but I like how they look!

Upcycled Denim Blue Jeans Carry Sack - Tote - Purse

Carry Sack - Tote - Purse made from Upcycled Denim Blue Jeans

These bags were made from the legs of a pair of Ashlin's blue jeans. She always seems to rip them in the thighs. She's still wearing the top part as shorts...but I have plans for them when she's done.

They have a rectangular bottom. Each bag has a liner and handles made from coordinating fabric. The bag stands 9 to 9 1/2 inches tall. The bottom measures approximately 5" x 4".

These bags easily hold 4 of my reading books, various sewing supplies, or a multitude of items. It would easily hold a skein of yarn and some knitting needles or crochet hooks. This is a perfect bag for on the go. I'm debating making a pattern that would turn them into insulated lunch totes.
